TUM System

[StudyInGermany]

TUM covers many fields of studies including natural sciences, engineering, management, and medical science.
At first TUM had its campus in downtown of muenchen near LMU(Ludwig Maximillian Universtat).
After new campus was built in Garching (rural area of muenchen), many departments moved to Garching campus.
Now only civil engineering, environment engineering, and management are remained in the downtown campus.

Garching campus is very spacious where many up-to-date buildings are built.
Just like KAIST and Daeduk technovalley Garching area contains several institutes such as Max Plank Institute for plasma physics.
Mechanical engineering department has remarkably large building as shown in this figure.

Each wing has 4 floors, and each floor is occuppied by one or two laboratories.
Each laboratory has its own facility room at the outside building. (it connects the ends of wings in previous figure.)

From now I will explain the differences in detail.
First, each ph.d student has his own office. Technically they are not called ph.d STUDENT, but they are called ph.d candidates or diplom RESEARCHERs.
They are treated as individual researchers, and imposed duties of researchers. Office is large as much as that of professor in KAIST.

Moreover, the facility building is also amazing. It seems like a factory with high ceiling and many machines.
well... the components of facilities are similar to us, but space is more than 4 times i think..
The whole building is shared by many laboratories, but it is divided sectionally. So what I mean is that the space of each laboratory is more than 4 times.
and every experimental set-up is organized very well. The laboratory is clean and pleasant. (There are even many plants and flowers!)

And similar to the lab of USA, there are many technitians. They help students do their experient well and make designed equipments.
Computer technitians also exist. They managed lab mail, homepage, licensed programs, etc. Students who want to use the computers in laboratory should submit their ID and password.
Each laboratory has its own copy&print room, library, tea kitchen, and conference room.
At the lobby share by another laboratory across, are there tables and chairs.
Magazines and journals are also located near the lobby.
The official tasks are managed by lab's secratory; therefore, as I saw, there is no Kwha Sa and Park Heesun Unni. ^^;;

Library is inside of the mechanical engineering building. I think.. each department has an individual library and Mensa(bistro for students).
There are also vending machines for coffe, tea, and cocoa, and small store selling milk, juice, sandwitch, snack, and bread.

As you read until now, this campus is amazing.
Research environments are great, and attitude of students toward their research topic is sincere.

The only disadvantage is that it is far from downtown and living places even more than worldcup stadium. Actually it is in the middle of wild land, and I should take both subway and bus to go there every morning.
But I heard that the subway line will be extended to the campus until October. After the construction it will be the best place to study!
